This visit was arranged for Third year and final year (Electronics and
Telecommunication) students from B.Tech. Total 39 students visited to GMRT with coordinator
Ms.S.S.Deshpande (Asst. Prof. ETC) along with Mrs. S. P. Kodgire (Head Electronics and Telecommunication).
This visit was part of their syllabus for subject Digital Communication and Information Theory.
NCRA, a center of the school of natural sciences of the TIFR, has set up a unique facility,
the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope for radio astronomical research at metre wavelengths. GMRT is a
very versatile instrument for investigating a variety of radio astrophysical problems ranging from
nearby Solar system to the edge of observable Universe.
NCRA runs both short and long term student technical training program. The short term
programs are mainly during the summer and are meant for students in their pre-final year. The long
term program runs during the academic year and are meant for final year students.
The SP programs are open to students in their pre-final/final year of - BE / BTech
(Any Branch). Projects are offered in a wide range of topics including Electronics (Analog/Digital)
Instrumentation Signal Processing
This visit was arranged for SY ETC students from B.Tech. Total 65 students visited to HPT
place with coordinator Mr. V.R Gosavi (Asst. Prof. ETC) along with Ms. Suchita Saraf. This visit was
part of their syllabus for subject Principles of Communication Engineering.
The exact communication process as RF (Radio Frequency) signals reception to dish through
satellite from Mumbai and Delhi, and then are reflected at the LNCB (Low Noise Block Convertor) and are
converted from GHz to MHz are explained.
The Frequency of the signals is 196.25 and V Output is 9.7KW and A Output is 558KW. The
video displayed is in CCV (Colour Composite Video) form and Colour Bust is 0.3. The Engineer explained
to all students the concept of Blower Room where there were 2 blowers in order to cool the Power
Amplifiers. The reason for two blowers was, if in case one stops working or has some fault in it, it
should automatically switch to the next blower to avoid any damage to the Amplifiers and other setup.
Then the processed audio and video signals from the control room are sent to the tower
in copper tubes.
Copper tubes are used in order to avoid leakage. The tower was 500 meters tall.
In which uppermost 125 meter was the Antenna. The processed RF audio and video signals are sent to
the antenna through the tower in copper tube. Thus the signals are transmitted from the tower antenna
to our personal antennas and hence we are able to watch Doordarshan on our television sets.
